Berlin, October 1, 2026 – Berlin-based waste management technology company Wasteer is gearing up for its next phase of growth. After three years in the market, the company is setting the course to push its international expansion further, make its operating structure scalable and develop additional products. As part of this, Julius Trunk takes on the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer (COO). At the same time, Wasteer is expanding its presence in the Italian market and has promoted Cecilia Giunta to Country Manager Italy. With Waste Check, the company is also adding object detection software for mobile use on smartphones to its portfolio, opening it up to new customer groups such as field staff, pre-sorters, recycling centres and waste management companies.

Benedict von Spankeren zu Reventlow, CEO of Wasteer, sees the broad organisational expansion as an important step for the company's future: "In the three years we have been active in the market, we have grown strongly and established ourselves quickly. Now it is about building on that successful foundation and making this growth sustainable in the long term. We see the key in scalable processes, strong cross-border customer support and product development that opens up new markets and customer groups."

Wasteer's AI-powered software and camera technology is currently in use at 46 thermal waste treatment plants in 13 countries, most of them in Europe, though the portfolio already includes two plants in Australia. Among other things, the company's modular technology makes it possible to detect objects in waste, run bunker management more efficiently and make data-driven strategic decisions. In total, the company analyses more than 17 million tonnes of waste per year, around 17 percent of the entire waste stream processed in European energy-from-waste plants.

A COO to build structures for scale

By 2030, Wasteer aims to support more than 100 plants in Europe alone and to be present on every continent. Growth is planned on three levels: further expansion of the existing business with European energy-from-waste plants, geographic expansion into additional international markets, and new products such as the Waste Check software module.

"Wasteer has grown beyond the phase where it was mainly about selling a vision. Today we have a product that convinces customers and is in increasing demand in the market," says Trunk about his new role as COO. "Now product, processes and customer support have to grow at the same pace. The ambition must be to create new modules and open up new markets without compromising on operational excellence."

Trunk brings extensive experience from digital projects in the waste management industry. Over recent years, working closely with a range of industry stakeholders, he has led projects that use digitalisation and artificial intelligence to unlock efficiencies in waste management. At Wasteer, he will apply this industry knowledge to develop internal structures, standardise customer success processes and prepare partner management for further growth.

A stronger presence in Italy

As one of the first steps in its further European expansion, Wasteer is strengthening its presence in Italy, where the company has worked with A2A, a major Italian energy utility, since 2024. For these plants, the plants of other customers and prospective customers in Italy, Cecilia Giunta will now serve as Country Manager Italy and dedicated Italian-speaking contact. This strengthens Wasteer's local support in a market that plays an important role in the company's international expansion.

Mobile object detection widens the audience

Alongside its expansion in Europe, Asia and the USA, Wasteer is also broadening its product range. With Waste Check, the company has created a web-based application that lets professionals access Wasteer's data and analysis algorithms with an ordinary smartphone or tablet. Customer groups such as pre-sorters and recycling centres can now flexibly assess waste on trucks, in containers or in the yard with a simple smartphone photo, without installing any cameras. The first customers are already using the technology.

"Waste Check is a good example of how we understand growth," says Trunk. "Having gained a lot of experience in thermal waste treatment, we are now looking at new parts of the supply chain and offering our solutions to pre-sorters and recycling centres, for example. This is how we keep developing steadily and dynamically: organisationally, geographically and technologically. That is exactly the intersection where I want to create impact together with the team."
