- Composition analysis and bunker management complement Wasteer's object detection offering
- New modules already commissioned by customers including EEW Energy from Waste, AEB Amsterdam Waste to Energy and Returkraft
- AI-based technology provides data foundation for significantly improved economic viability of thermal waste recovery plants
Berlin, 17 March 2026 – Berlin-based company Wasteer is expanding its solution portfolio with two new AI-based modules that improve data transparency for thermal waste recovery plants: composition analysis and bunker management. The technological foundation builds on Wasteer's existing camera systems and software solutions for object detection. The collected data can be used to address key industry challenges – from transparency of calorific values in deliveries, to safety risks within the plant, through to the plannability of throughput rates.
This product expansion follows a significant growth in the company's customer base. The British enfinium Group is extending object detection with Wasteer to all of the group's plants in the United Kingdom. Wasteer's new modules are to follow shortly. For 15 plants of major customer EEW Energy from Waste GmbH (EEW), the modules are already being rolled out alongside object detection. The MHKW Frankfurt is also now using the company's object detection. New Wasteer customers such as AEB Amsterdam Waste to Energy, the largest waste-to-energy plant in Europe, or Norwegian Returkraft, as well as new customers in Spain and France, further demonstrate that demand for the company's entire solution portfolio exists across Europe. In total, Wasteer now monitors waste streams of more than 12 million tonnes per year across more than 30 plants in ten countries.
"In waste recovery plants, the rule of thumb is: the better you understand the input, the better you can control the output. Those who gain transparency over deliveries can actively influence the output – whether that is the calorific value distribution or the early detection of emission peaks," explains Benedict von Spankeren, CEO of Wasteer. "Our technology makes it possible to continuously monitor in real time which waste is arriving, in what composition, and where – and helps to process it in the best possible way. The feedback from our customers demonstrates how relevant the solution is for the industry."
Using modern camera systems and AI-powered software, Wasteer continuously analyses high-volume waste streams upon delivery and in the bunker. With its comprehensive database and the AI trained on it, the company is able to recognise a wide variety of different material categories. On this basis, calorific values can then be calculated or the use of operating materials controlled.
Dynamic Pricing Models Made Possible
The results of a deep composition analysis answer a question that has so far been almost impossible to address reliably: what does an individual customer actually deliver to the plant? Wasteer consolidates the image data from a delivery into an analysis per truck, provides information on material shares, calorific values and relevant emission parameters, and makes it possible to clearly attribute results using automatic licence plate recognition. With this knowledge, contracts can be qualitatively evaluated and deviations from agreed calorific values made visible.
The potential is enormous: instead of charging flat-rate prices, operators can introduce variable, quality-dependent pricing models where the customer pays based on the actual calorific value of their delivery. It also enables active management of plant utilisation: depending on plant load and calorific value level, operators can optimise their plants through targeted selection of different customers and waste qualities. This allows the calorific value composition of deliveries to be actively influenced to achieve an optimal calorific value mix in the bunker.
Bunker Management Ensures Plannability and Stability
The bunker management module focuses on control within the plant. The specific aim is to continuously analyse the bunker contents and provide guidance on optimal mixing. This innovation is an important building block in moving towards a fully digitalised, smart plant – a so-called Digital Plant.
Inconsistent calorific values and inhomogeneous bunker mixtures are among the main causes of throughput fluctuations and increased consumption of operating materials. This is where Wasteer comes in: the system creates a surface profile of the bunker and delivers data-based recommendations for crane operation. The goal is stable, uniform and plannable combustion processes, lower operating material costs and above all higher throughput – a decisive lever for economic viability.
Demand Is High
"Artificial intelligence and new technologies are key levers for the transformation of our industry. What matters is deploying them responsibly, practically and scalably. They are a means to an end," comments Timo Poppe, CEO of EEW Energy from Waste GmbH. "Wasteer's solutions bring exactly these elements together. They increase the economic viability of our plants and make them fit for the future. The insights give us a data foundation with which we can sharpen our long-term strategy in a tailored way."
With the expansion of its portfolio, Wasteer is responding to the growing need for data-based control instruments in waste management. Not least due to new requirements at European level – such as CO₂ pricing in the United Kingdom, or domestically the Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG), the Commercial Waste Ordinance (GewAbfV) and the 17th Regulation on the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchV) – precise knowledge of the composition and quality of waste streams is increasingly coming into focus.
Wasteer has established itself in recent years as a partner for the waste management industry in addressing such challenges. The company has so far distinguished itself particularly in the field of detecting conspicuous objects. With its technology and pragmatic integration into existing operational workflows, Wasteer has already processed more than 38 million images and identified more than 1,500 gas cylinders in the last quarter alone. In 2025, the company was awarded the Federal EcoDesign Prize by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Federal Environment Agency for its technology – the highest state award for ecological design in Germany.
